May 18, 2022

It is our second to last week of school and I’m sure everyone is feeling tired.  I know our family seems to be “back” in full force this spring with sports and other activities!  I hope that you all are able to find time to rest in these next couple of weeks leading up to the last day of school.

Individual/Group Sessions:

Last week, I met with most of my groups for the last time.  This week, I will finish up the last of the group sessions as well as the last of the individual sessions.  Any students I met with this year, will be on my list to check in with at the beginning of the year.  Once the first few weeks of the school year are settled, I will review groups and start placing students in either groups or individual sessions.

Social Emotional Learning Articles:

I found some really great articles that I would like to share that have to do with enhancing social emotional learning at home.  Many of these things are strategies you are probably already using, but it is always nice to have a list of resources, too!

Edutopia:  Social Emotional Learning Resources

EdSurge:  10 Ways Parents Can Bring SEL home

Trying Together:  Social Emotional Resources

Naeyc: Building Social and Emotional Support At Home

Please let me know if you have any questions as we close out this school year!

Proposition S, WGSD's $45 Million No-Tax-Rate Increase Bond Issue

The Board of Education has unanimously approved a recommendation to place a $45 million no-tax-rate increase on the Aug. 2 ballot. If approved, the money would be used to improve aging buildings and learning environments across the district. The proposal addresses electrical upgrades, mitigation for water infiltration, accessibility and more.

You can find information about the proposition here  including reports from the district's Finance and Building committees, survey results and a presentation on priorities for bond issue funding.  Fliers describing projects at each building are here

10,000 Pencils

If you have $1, would you purchase school supplies, or shoes for your child to be able to walk to school? This is a dilemma that many parents face in developing countries. By sending unused and gently-used school supplies to schools in these countries, the children are able to get both shoes which their parents then purchase, as well as the school supplies from the donor families and school in St Louis.

10 000 Pencils is a volunteer-run and led 501 (c)3 which aims to assist underprivileged children both in the US as well as internationally with school supplies. In the past 5 years, the organization has been able to send supplies to Zambia, Malawi, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Brazil, and in St Louis we have partnered with Ritenour School District, St Louis Public School District, YWCA Head Start program and the Urban League Headstart program.

Our program collects the following school supplies: pens, pencils, markers, color pencils, notebooks and writing paper, crayons, reading books, scissors, glue and erasers.

With the school supplies we collected in 2021 from 6 schools, we have been able to assist 2,000 learners in Malawi which is our focus country currently.

We appreciate your support!

Beginning in the 22-23 school year, the Webster Groves School District has added late start days to the school calendar.

22-23 School Calendar

Late start days will allow for additional time for our teachers to use data and collaboratively plan to continue to address the needs of all of our students.  Families who need help with student supervision on late start days can participate in a program available at each building (K-12).  The times for the late start supervision program are included below:

Elementary Schools (K-5): Avery, Bristol, Clark, Edgar Road, Givens, and Hudson

Late Start Supervision Program: 7:40am-8:50am

School Day Arrival Begins @ 8:50am

School begins @ 9:05am

Hixson Middle School and Webster Groves High School

Late Start Supervision Program: 8:15am - 9:25am

School Day Arrival Begins @ 9:25am

School begins @ 9:40am

WGSD staff will manage the Late Start Supervision Program, including instructional aides and substitute teachers.  Families who participate in the morning Adventure Club Program will automatically be enrolled in the Late Start Supervision Program for your building.

Registration in the Late Start Supervision Program will be for the entire school year (all late start days), so that we can appropriately plan for staffing for the 22-23 year.  To register for the Late Start Supervision Program, families can log into the parent portal and follow the registration prompts.  Registration will open on Wednesday, May 4 and continue through June 30.  Families who enroll after June 30 will work with their schools to make a determination about Late Start Supervision for their family.

Please click here to go to the Parent Portal for registration. Thank you!
