After-School Activities - 2nd Semester

  • Activities meet from 3:30 to 4:20. Students must be off campus by 4:30.
    Clubs begin the week of January 8th and end the week of May 7th.
    There will be no after school activities the week of March 11th or March 18th.

    Archery (6th Grade)
    Students will learn how to shoot bows and arrows. Students will also participate in various target activities such as apple shooting. Students will meet every Tuesday and Thursday depending on the number of students.

    Baseball Club
    Hixson student-athletes will sharpen their mental and fundamental skills in the game of baseball.

    E-Sports
    Learn, practice, and compete on Hixson's Esports team. The team plays in the Missouri Scholastic Esports Federation (MOSEF) League against other middle school teams across Missouri. We play Super Smash Brothers Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. Experience and equipment is not required to join. Players practice on Wednesdays and Thursdays. During the season games are on Thursdays. The team also competes in local tournaments.Consistent participation at practice is required to keep your spot on the team. No more than 25 players can be in the club, 14 players will compete on crews during season games.

    Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
    A group for LGBTQ+ students and their friends. The club strives to create a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ students and a place for kids to find community and make friends.

    Hixson Beautification
    Students are invited to pick up trash using “grabbers” supplied by the school on the east side of Elm Ave and along East Glendale. Students will not be crossing any streets.

    Rubix Cube Club
    This is an activity for experienced and beginner cubers. If you are interested in learning how to solve a rubix cube or would like to sharpen your skills, this club is for you! It would be helpful for students to bring their own cube but it is not necessary. If you have cubes you are willing to share with others, please bring those as well!

    Running Club (Only March through May)
    Come out and join a great group that learns running drills, workouts, and plays team bonding games. The running club plans to race together at the Jim Schoemehl 5k amongst other fun activities together. We will also have team shirts for sale this year!

    Model UN
    Model UN is an organization that lets students confront the problems in the world, cooperate with other schools and to come up with solutions. Students learn about other cultures and nations culminating with a field trip and cultural extravaganza.

    Thrive Jr. Fresh Inc. is a way for students to work in teams to develop a product, pitch their idea and launch their business.

    This club is for students who are brand new to volleyball and/or have up to 2 years of playing experience.

    This club is for students who have played more than a year of club volleyball or more than 2 years of experience outside of club volleyball.

    7th Grade Jazz Band
    This ensemble will learn to play a variety of standard jazz styles including: Swing, Rock, and Latin. We will be using the standard jazz ensemble set up which usually comprises Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Drum Set. The purpose of auditions is for Mr. Stevison and Mrs. Tokos to hear a sample of everyone’s playing ability in a jazz style. We may take a larger number of students depending upon audition results. We will perform a concert at Delmar Hall with the WGHS Jazz Bands in January (TBD) and at the Fine Arts Festival, May 9 at 6:00 PM.

    Best Buddies
    Best Buddies in Missouri offers One-To-One Friendship and Leadership Development programs for individuals with and without disabilities in Missouri. Hixson has a chapter of this organization. In addition to fostering friendships, we plan and participate in events throughout the school year including Special Olympics (Bowling, Track/Field, Bocce), End of Year celebration, and fundraising events.

    Board Games Club
    Students can join Board Games Club to learn and play a variety of board games, card games, and party games with other students. Many games are provided, but students can also bring in their favorites each week to share with others.

    Book Battle!
    Book Battle is a competition club in which students compete against each other using.their understanding of the 23-24 assigned Book Battle books. Students will meet weekly on Tuesday to read, discuss, and practice trivia about the 20 books. We love to read, eat snacks, and have fun!

    Dungeons and Dragons
    This club will be held on Tuesday and Thursday. The maximum number of students who may participate is 10. Students will build characters, workshop backgrounds, and help new players plan how they will play their characters' roles and how to manage the mechanics of the game.

    Hixson String Symphony
    This is an extracurricular orchestra group for students who play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students must have at least 1 year of experience on their instrument. We will be performing music that is slightly more challenging than our regular orchestra classes, and learning new key signatures and styles of music. Students will perform 2 concerts that include the Holiday House tour in December, and the Fine Arts Festival in May. Students who are interested will need to sign up with Mrs. Grubb in the Orchestra Room 126.

    Wind Ensemble
    The Wind Ensemble is an auditioned concert band made up of 7th and 8th grade students. This ensemble plays a variety of band literature including: classical, traditional wind band, and movie music. All concert band instruments including percussion are needed for this ensemble. Wind Ensemble will perform at the Holiday House Tour on December 3 and at the Fine Arts Festival on May 9 at 6:00 PM.
